Disaster Training Classes

The American Red Cross offers over 50 disaster training courses ranging in subjects such as shelter operations to managing spontaneous volunteers.  However, while the class list is comprehensive, it can be a little overwhelming.  That's why the St. Joseph County Chapter has narrowed down the list of required disaster courses to just ten (other courses will be offered but are not required).  Disaster volunteers have one year to complete all of the required courses.  They are:

  1. CPR (renewed annually)
  2. First Aid (renewed every three years)
  3. Introduction to Disaster - an on-line course available at http://www.redcross.org/flash/course01_v01/
  4. Fulfilling Our Mission
  5. Mass Care
  6. Shelter Operations
  7. Shelter Simulations
  8. Client Casework
  9. Disaster Assessment
  10. Psychological First Aid

A list of classes being offered in Spring 2010 is available here.

If you have any questions about these courses, a Red Cross staff person would be happy to talk to you.  Just e-mail Carol Stanton at cstanton@stjoe-redcross.org.
